All Y’all (that’s plural) know that the Loft presents some wonderful music. But we at the loft are particularly honored to be able to host these legendary Texans. Come join us for their appearance!

About our performers...

Since the 2004 release of his debut Mercy, word of Austin’s Sam Baker and his songs have slowly, but surely spun its way around the world. On last August 7, Baker returned with the second part of the story, the self released Pretty World. Co-produced by fellow Texan and songwriter Walt Wilkins, the new songs reflect a life lived well and nearly lost. Austin producer/songwriter Gurf Morlix said of mercy “It's the best writing I've come across since Mary Gauthier.” The UK's Maverick Magazine awarded Mercy five stars and writers that have discovered this raw talent often compare him to fellow Texans Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. Baker's songs are pictures sketched in short, spare lines and lay bare the honest truths and simple details of life. Pretty World celebrates the moments large and small that frame our lives.

Gurf Morlix has been a professional musician since 1966, and he can play just about any instrument he might find lying around. Gurf has produced, recorded with, or performed with a veritable "Who's-Who" of the music business; the list includes Warren Zevon, Mary Gauthier, Robert Earl Keen, Slaid Cleaves, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Buddy and Julie Miller, Ian McLagan, Lucinda Williams, Tom Russell, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Mojo Nixon, Jim Lauderdale, Jerry Lee Lewis, Peter Case, Steve Earle, Harry Dean Stanton, Syd Straw, B.W. Stevenson… phew! He worked with Lucinda Williams for eleven years, serving as guitarist, vocalist and bandleader, as well as producing her critically acclaimed albums Lucinda Williams (Rough Trade/Koch) and Sweet Old World (Chameleon/Elektra). Gurf has released four solo albums: Toad Of Titicaca, Fishin' In The Muddy, Cut 'n Shoot, and his latest - Diamonds to Dust, which was named in NO DEPRESSION magazine's TOP 50 of 2007. Gurf is a member of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, and the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame.

Opening the show...
Seven years after beginning West of Rome with his Midwestern collaborators, Chris DeMay released his first solo record, I Won't Be Me, on Slothtrop Records (Madison, WI) in May 2007. The landscape of songwriters like Neil Young, Steve Earle, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith come to mind when listening to DeMay’s release. Recent work has found him collaborating with folks from Juniper Tar; he’ll be performing acoustically at the Loft.

Come show your support of great original music.
